Strategies

A2R work alongside the initiatives and interventions in place within each school by enhancing the strategies for closing the achievement gap. We improve the learning experiences of culturally diverse students, especially those who are struggling to achieve at high levels.

  • By looking at the cultural differences that students bring to school, their everyday experiences, and connecting these experiences to what is taught.
  • By recognising the skills culturally diverse students have learned in their homes and communities; skills that do not show up on standardised tests, but which can contribute to academic success.
  • By cultivating resilience in students to help them persevere in school, despite the repeated failure or discouragement they may have experienced in their environment.
  • By finding out how students, who are difficult to motivate, are motivated outside of school and by using those motivations  inside the school environment where they can be used to direct students towards building an academic mind-set.

Strategies used to raise attainment:

  • Quality interactions within group
  • High order questioning techniques
  • High level discussions
  • Task which challenge them to think ‘outside the box’
  • Student-led questions
  • Graduated tasks offering a spectrum of challenges/ scenarios
  • Compiling revision timetable and engaging parents/ carer in the process
  • Support/ advise parents to enforce curfew (restricted time) after school
  • Inspire them to conduct their own independent research….trip to the British Museum
  • Introduced a successful Arsenal Footballer who met the pupils as a positive role model in order to highlight the importance of education in sport
  • Frequent 1-1 meetings, tracking pupil progress within school
